Age NI welcomes the decision by the Belfast Trust not to cease laundry, shopping and cleaning services for 550 older people as planned.

Our Advice Service received calls from very distressed older people and their families after yesterday’s announcement.

Age NI’s vision of social care recognises the rights, aspirations and diversity of us all, and is based on the right to live with dignity, independence, security and choice. At the heart of our vision is a system that enhances wellbeing and independence.

Older people tell us that they want to remain at home for as long as possible and home-help can often be that little bit of support that a person needs to stay independent in their own home for longer.

Person-centred, community-based services should enable greater independence and choice for our older population and in the context of an ageing society, more needs to be done to support individual older people to remain at home, not less.
