The population of Northern Ireland is ageing. This demographic shift clearly brings with it economic and social challenges, as well as huge opportunities for the devolved administration.
Age NI believes the Programme for Government provides an opportunity for the Executive to progress key issues which will make Northern Ireland a better place for us all as we age.
The reality is that ageing cuts across all Departments. It is imperative that the Executive work together to produce a cohesive Programme for Government reflecting the collaboration necessary to improve older people’s lives now and for future generations.
The priorities in terms of our ageing population are clear - the elimination of pensioner poverty; the introduction of social tariffs as a response to escalating fuel prices; a modern and responsive care system with a focus on prevention, rights, entitlements and fairness; and the introduction of legislation banning discrimination on the basis of age in goods, facilities and services.
Strong, decisive political leadership on these issues makes economic sense and is what the people of Northern Ireland want.
