Anne O’Reilly, Age NI Chief Executive commented, 'Age NI welcomes this announcement to provide additional financial support to older people among others, during the winter period.

'We are encouraged by this development and believe that this is a positive step in the right direction. It is essential that those most vulnerable are protected while longer term solutions to fuel poverty are sought.

'Whilst this payment will bring comfort to a number of people this year, it is essential that the NI Executive continues to work together on the introduction of more substantial, strategic measures. These should include an effective fuel poverty strategy which has definite targets and outcomes against energy efficiency, energy prices and income, as well as the necessary resources to tackle the problem.

'Broad objectives outlined in the recent Programme for Government aimed at reducing fuel poverty need to be clearly articulated and implemented if we are to tackle this issue effectively.'
