Age NI calls for strong political leadership to support vulnerable older people in the face of today’s price increase from Power NI.
Anne O’Reilly, Age NI Chief Executive stated, 'While we understand the volatile economic climate that is impacting on energy prices, more has to be done to protect vulnerable customers for whom income is not increasing in line with costs.
'Age NI continues to call for benefits to be paid automatically to ensure that older members of our society receive the benefits to which they are entitled.
'In addition, consumers in Great Britain and Republic of Ireland have access to social price support. We call on DSD and DETI to work together to drive forward proposals on the social price support that could become available in NI.
Anne concluded, 'We would remind older people, their carers and families who are in need of advice, information or practical support on a wide range of issues including welfare benefits, community care, housing and health, that they can contact the Age NI Advice Service on Freephone 0808 808 7575 to speak to a specialist advisor in confidence.
