Northern Ireland organisations planning to apply for a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Out: Connecting Older People programme have been advised to get their project proposals in as soon as possible.
The £20 million programme supports the most isolated and excluded older people across Northern Ireland, including those affected by bereavement, disability or long term illness, or those who live in residential care or sheltered housing.
Organisations in Northern Ireland can apply for grants of up to £500,000 to help improve their lives by running activities such as physical and mental health projects, volunteering programmes or projects that bring isolated older people and young people together.
The Big Lottery Fund has advised that the closing date for organisations to send in the Outline Proposal Form for their project is 29th February 2012.
So if you are an organisation with an innovative idea for a project to improve the lives of the most at risk older people in society, then you should consider the timescales involved and not leave it until it is too late.
Groups that have already benefited from the programme include a project tackling social isolation among older people in Ballymena and a scheme to support older people with dementia in west Belfast.
And an initiative giving former carers the skills to provide support for older people across a number of local health trusts and a project to tackle fear and improve health among older citizens in south Belfast have also been funded.

Frank Hewitt, Big Lottery Fund NI Chair, said: “Our £20 million Connecting Older People programme is open now for applications, but the programme closes to outline proposal forms on 29th Feb 2012, so if you’ve got an idea for a project that you think could be funded we would advise you to get your project proposal in as soon as possible.
“Grants of up to £500,000 are available to support older people through activities such as physical and mental health projects, volunteering programmes and projects that will bring isolated older people and young people together.”
