The Age NI HandyVan service has been operating in selected areas across NI since 2006 primarily helping older people improve their safety by fitting security products in their homes and also carrying out some minor repairs.
The funding to continue the service is no longer available and the Handyvan service will not be taking any more referrals.
In the context of the current economic climate Age NI believes that it is time to strategically rethink how we can develop the service to meet the needs of older people and explore new opportunities to improve service delivery sustainable for the longer term.
We had been working with partners to establish a business case to adopt a new model of delivery and will be seeking the views of older people and key stakeholders over the coming months. This would see us using the best elements of HandyVan to create a Home Support Agency which could provide a wider home repair and maintenance service for older people available across all of Northern Ireland. This could be a positive opportunity to extend our reach and an exciting proposition to develop the learnings we have gained from the HandyVan service.
With an eye to the future, we can make a huge impact to the lives of older people and change the experience of growing older.
