Shoppers cite 'value for money' as the main reason they visit charity shops. Charity Retail Association survey also finds that 'helping those who can't afford new items' is the main reason people give for donating goods.
Low prices are the main reason people buy from charity shops, according to research commissioned by the Charity Retail Association.
The survey, carried out by JRA Research, asked more than 1,000 people to rate the reasons they visited charity shops and donated to them.
On visiting charity shops, fifty-eight per cent of respondents selected "low prices/good value for money". Wanting to support a charity was the next most important factor, selected by 47 per cent, followed by wanting to support a specific charity that they cared about, which 44 per cent chose.
On donating goods to charity shops, 49 per cent said it was to help other people that cannot afford to buy new items.
Wendy Mitchell, head of policy and public affairs at the Charity Retail Association, said the research helped to explain why charity shops had weathered the recession.
"Charity shops continue to provide a vital service to people on high streets up and down the country, in difficult economic times when they are feeling the pinch," said Mitchell.
"They provide the only opportunity for many people to buy high-quality goods without spending a fortune."
