Volunteering
Because everyone has skills, knowledge and interests gained from work or life experience, we can match these with the help we need and the time you have.
Making a vital difference
By volunteering you will be helping us to deliver our services and activities, improving the quality of later life and wellbeing of older people across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands.
It’s also a great way for people of any age to make new friends, learn new skills, gain work experience, and play an active part in the community.
What do our volunteers do?
Our volunteers give their time and experience free of charge, helping to deliver the charity’s services:
Ageing Well and social activities programmes
Our volunteers help to run a wide range of activities that promote physical and mental well-being for people aged 50 and over.
Befriending service
Our volunteers provide friendship and support to housebound or lonely older people.
Hospital Discharge Support service
Our volunteers visit recently discharged patients to make sure they are getting back on their feet.
Information and advice service
Our volunteers give information and advice to older people, their families and carers.
Office support
Our volunteers support us with administrative and clerical work, backing up the work of staff in reception, computer work, and information-gathering work.
Charity shop work
Volunteers support our fundraising and recycling activity on the shop floor, and collect or sort goods in the back room.
Promotion and fundraising
Volunteers help to run events, give talks, and distribute PR materials.
Engagement
Our volunteers assist older people to have a voice in how local services are designed and delivered.
What you could get from volunteering with us
Satisfaction: giving time, making a vital difference
Learning: gaining new skills, knowledge and experience
Friendship: enjoying meeting new people
Opportunity: being active in the local community and the organisation
For some, volunteering can be a route to employment, a chance to try something different which may lead to a career or lifestyle change, an opportunity to meet different people, and a means of self-development.
Whatever your reason to volunteer, we make sure that you have what you need to perform your role. A service manager provides guidance and support when needed. We pay all reasonable expenses that arise from volunteering‚ such as travel — you will not be out of pocket!
What our volunteers say
'I have been very happy with my volunteering experience with Age UK. All concerned have been very supportive and made me very welcome. I particularly appreciate that staff have made sure that I know my assistance has been helpful and valued.'
How do I become a volunteer?
We welcome the support of volunteers of all ages, but in most circumstances volunteers will need to be over 18 years old. All volunteers will require references from two people who have known them in a personal capacity for over two years. Some volunteering roles will require a Criminal Records Bureau check.
Contact our Volunteering Coordinator to find out about becoming a volunteer by phone, email or post using the details below. Or complete our contact form.
