How to leave a gift in your will

Having a will and keeping it up-to-date helps ensure that your wishes can be respected and your legacy benefits people and causes you really care about. We would always recommend that you speak to a qualified professional such as a solicitor, when making or amending your will.

Your solicitor will be able to advise you on the required wording to carry out your wishes. If you wish to leave a gift to Age UK Plymouth in your will, all you need is our charity details below:

Plymouth Age Concern (operating as Age UK Plymouth),
Astor Drive,
Mount Gould,

Please remember to include our Registered Charity Number 281820.

The suggested legal wording below ensures that your gift to Age UK Plymouth will be used in accordance with your wishes.

Percentage Sum
I give (NUMBER)% of the residue of my estate to Plymouth Age Concern operating as Age UK Plymouth (Registered Charity Number 281820) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for this gift. I give the sum of £_____ to Plymouth Age Concern operating as Age UK Plymouth (Registered Charity Number 281820) for its general charitable purposes. If you already have a will

If you already have a will and you want to include a gift to Age UK Plymouth in it, there may not be a need to rewrite it. You can ask a qualified professional such as a solicitor to add an amendment (called a codicil). As a general rule, if the change you wish to make is quite small or simple, you can use a codicil, and if the change is more significant or complex you should make a new will.

What kind of gift can I leave to Age UK Plymouth?

You can leave a specific sum of money or an item such as jewellery or a piece of art. Alternatively you can leave a share in, or all of, what's left of the value of your estate after family and loved ones have been taken care of. The advantage of leaving a share (also known as residuary gift) is that it remains the same over time, and you won't need to change your will to keep up with inflation. When discussing your will with a professional they may use the following terms:

  • A residuary gift is a percentage of your estate once any specified gifts have been made to friends and family. Many of our supporters choose to leave this type of gift because its value will be dependent on the value of your estate at any given time rather than a set amount. This provides supporters with more flexibility when deciding how to ensure that their loved ones are well looked after first and foremost.
  • A pecuniary gift is a specific amount of money. It’s worth bearing in mind that the effects of inflation mean that this type of gift is likely to lose value over time and may end up being less than you initially intend.
  • A specific gift is a gift of a specified item – such as a personal possession, land, buildings or stocks and shares.
