Power of attorney

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you choose someone you trust to make decisions about your finances on your behalf, if you are no longer mentally capable of making those decisions yourself.

Age UK Legal Services can advise and draft the Lasting Power of Attorney for you and register it at the Office of the Public Guardian, so that it can be activated in the future if necessary.

Advice on applications to the Office of the Public Guardian

If someone close to you loses mental capacity and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, Age UK Legal Services can advise on the appointment of a suitable Deputy. They can also advise on the application needed to the Office of the Public Guardian.

Powers of Attorney in Scotland are known as Continuing Powers of Attorney and the procedure is different from England and Wales. Irwin Mitchell can assist with Continuing Powers of Attorney if you live in Scotland.
