Around 390,000 older people live in residential care. For each of these individuals, promoting quality of life must be prioritised along with provision of care and support.
Age UK is working to secure decent funding and investment, a well-trained workforce and good regulation for the sector.
Older carers offer invaluable support to family and friends. While many willingly take on a caring role, the responsibility can lead to both material and health-related disadvantage.
Age UK recognises the importance of carers and the need for them to have access to appropriate support.
Social care for older people is in crisis; services are often not of an acceptable standard and are restricted to people with the highest levels of needs.
Age UK is working for needed reforms to answer how much high quality care will cost and who should pay for it.
Other reforms will improve state pension entitlements for groups such as carers. There are also long-term plans to increase state pension age, starting in 2010 for women.
Most people who have care and support needs want to maintain independence, choice and control.
While our care system is striving to achieve this vision through initiatives including self-directed support and personal budgets, Age UK is working to ensure such developments are accessible to older people.
