Our 2010/11 grant round saw a particular focus on capacity-building awards. We made four types of award available - Research Fellowships, Senior Research Fellowships, Clinical Fellowships and PhD Studentships.

2010/2011

Thirteen grants were awarded, three for Fellowships (one each of each type) and ten for PhD Studentships, at a total value of £971,857 excluding contributions made by the host institution of the Senior Fellowship to the cost of that award (50%) and the British Geriatrics Society to the cost of the Clinical Fellowship (50%).

In the table below, EoIs are Expressions of Interest.

Number of EoIs received Number of full applications received  Number of grants made % of full applications to EoIs % grants made to EoIs % grants made to applications
Fellowships 55 11* 3 20% 5.5% 27%
PHD studentships 103 22 10 21% 9.7% 45%
Total 158 33 13 21% 8.2% 39%

* Shortlisted to 8 for interview.

We met our target of at least three referees’ reviews for each full application.

2009/10

We did not run an RiA grant round this year as it was the year in which Help the Aged and Age Concern merged to form Age UK.  However, we made:

  • seven new grants for applications received in the 2008 round
  • jointly with the RNID, four grants for PhD Studentships on the ageing auditory system (these were part of a special joint call in 2009 to stimulate this under-researched field)

The total value of these 11 grants was £956,457 excluding the RNID’s contribution (50%) to the joint PhD Studentships.

The seven RiA grants comprised:

  • 2 PhD Studentships
  • 2 Research Fellowships
  • 1 New Investigator award
  • 2 Research Projects

2008/09

This call included all types of Fellowship, PhD Studentships, New Investigators awards and Research Project grants.

Eight grants were awarded at a total value of £707,403, comprising:

  • 5 PhD Studentships
  • 1 Clinical Fellowships
  • 1 New Investigator award
  • 1 Research Project
