There has been a growing shift towards personalisation of social care. Last year’s launch of the Self Directed Support Strategy and draft legislation, coupled with the emphasis on personal budgets (especially direct payments) for all people using adult social care, is a clear signal that this remains the direction of travel.
Age Scotland see the rebalance of the relationship between the state and individual as key to giving people more control over their lives and promoting confidence and well being.
Age Scotland wants to see the numbers receiving Self Directed Support grow steadily – faster than in the past five years – but we do not believe that they should be the default model for all older service users. Self Directed Support must however be a matter of choice for all service users (where possible), in full knowledge of both positive and potentially negative aspects.
