Dementia Active Friends Volunteer

We urgently need a volunteer to help with our Dementia Active Friends project.

Location: Clients home and / or Community Activity

Hours: Minimum of 3 - 4 hours per week for 1 year

Reporting to: Health and Wellbeing Development Officer

Role overview

This project is about supporting older people who have received a diagnosis of early onset dementia.

The goal of a Dementia Active Friend Volunteer is to help and support the client to continue with the activities they enjoy doing for as long as possible.  You will work as part of a wider support team, including an NHS Memory Advisor and will visit your client on a weekly basis.

Once we have introduced you to the client we will agree together a regular visiting and activity arrangement.  If there are any changes to these agreed arrangements you will advise Age UK Southampton.   You are required to keep in close contact with Age UK Southampton, keeping us informed regularly of how things are going.  You will complete a record sheet of your visits and submit this to the Health & Wellbeing Development Officer on a monthly basis.

This is an incredibly rewarding role where you will use a variety of skills, gain experience and make a big difference to our clients and their families.

Skills and abilities required

You will be sociable, a good listener, reliable, trustworthy, sensitive, a good communicator and you will understand the importance of confidentiality. Your background will ideally have been in the mental health, social care, health visitor service or any related person-centred care / support environment.

What we offer

We will offer you awareness training on dementia before you start and on-going support, training and development. You will also be invited to our volunteer social and networking events.

We will pay reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.

All our Volunteers will be asked to adhere to Age UK Southampton’s Policies and Procedures on Volunteering, Health & Safety, Lone Working, Professional Conduct and Confidentiality.

We undertake Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) formerly called Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks and take up references on all our Volunteers.
