Macmillan Befriending
The Macmillan befriending service is a volunteer based service for people who are living with cancer in the Sunderland area. The support will be offered through visiting at Sunderland Royal Hospital, a community venue or the person's home.
The befriending service will provide an opportunity for the person to receive support (practically and emotionally) throughout their cancer journey. Referrals to the service will be accepted by health and social care professionals such as clinical nurse specialists, ward managers and staff, social workers and the Palliative care team.
We can also accept referrals from individuals; however, this will need to be followed up by our Co-ordinator who will liaise with a health or social care professional.

On receipt of a referral form, the Macmillan Befriending Volunteering Co-ordinator will contact the person referred to meet to discuss the service.
Volunteers play an important role in the service and will have undertaken an induction programme and be CRB checked. Our volunteers will work with a person on a one-to-one basis and will assist with on-going support through visiting. They will also provide assistance to access community venues, hospital appointments and events, as well as companionship.
If you would like to volunteer please contact the Macmillan Befriending Volunteering Co-ordinator using the details below.
