Thailand floods appeal - donate now

People hit by the floodwaters in Thailand in October 2011.

Thousands of older people are in desperate need of food, shelter and sanitation.

Thailand is suffering its worst flooding in five decades. One third of the country's provinces have been devastated, nearly 400 people have been killed, and around nine million people affected*.

The prolonged and serious nature of the floods is particularly affecting older people. Many have lost a lifetime of belongings and are suffering from emotional trauma. In some places the flood water has already been present for a month and is showing no signs of receding.

Millions have lost their homes

Some 62 of the country's 76 provinces have so far been affected, and millions of people have lost their homes. The agricultural industry has been badly hit, and three million acres of farmland have been damaged by the flood water.

Thousands are already living in makeshift camps and evacuation centres, and the threat of yet more flooding is still high. Some parts of Thailand's capital city, Bangkok, and its suburbs are flooded. Land, businesses, homes and possessions have been destroyed.

We're supporting people to rebuild their lives

The national government and local agencies are responding. We are aiming to deliver food, water and blankets to 1,500 older people in the provinces of Ayuthaya and Chainat. We will deliver aid by boat, using a network of local volunteers.

Godfred Paul, Senior Programme Manager for East Asia and the Pacific at HelpAge International, our sister agency, commented, ‘More definitely needs to be done, especially relief assistance and aid recovery as it could take up to six weeks for these catastrophic flood waters to recede. Food and water shortages are also still a problem in remote areas.'

Where your donation will go:

£10 will provide two older people with food items such as milk and rice for one week.

£20 will buy non-food items such as a kettle and chlorine tablets to sterilise contaminated water for eight older people.

£45 will provide 18 older people with basic personal hygiene essentials such as toilet rolls and incontinence pads for one week.
