It was the Romans that discovered the healing benefits of Britain’s mineral-rich spa waters centuries ago. Why not take a visit to one of the UK’s ten spa towns and find out why this fashion was so popular? You could even take a dip yourself.
Bath is probably the most well-known spa town in the UK. It was discovered by the Romans over 2000 years ago. And is now home to the best kept Roman baths in the world – even better than those in Rome itself!
Bath is so rich in spa heritage that the city is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can still take a dip in the waters as it is the UK’s only natural thermal public spa.
Leamington is now one of Britain’s largest towns. It would have probably remained a small village if it wasn’t for the discovery of its healing spa waters. The town’s Royal Pump Rooms and Baths were opened in 1814, attracting visitors hoping to soothe various ailments by bathing in the spas.
Today, you can explore the Pump House and learn about the world's first gravity-fed piped hot water system. For the more adventurous, you can also taste the salty spa waters.
In the 1700s, Llandrindod was a spa resort described as the ‘Queen of Welsh Watering Places’. The spring was discovered by Mrs Jenkins, a farmer’s wife, in 1736.
She began selling the water to visitors and word soon spread about its healing effects. The farm was transformed into a hotel called the Pump House to cope with the visitors. Although the Pump House no longer exists, Llandrindod Wells is still famous for its spa town charm.
You'll have to leave the beaten track to get to this spa town in the Scottish Highlands, but it's well worth it. The town offers a unique combination of Victorian Regency and Highland traditions.
Until the discovery of the springs in the 1700s, Strathpeffer was just a remote Highland village. But when its springs were declared the healthiest in Britain, a stream of visitors from all over Europe descended on the village. The historic Spa Pavilion was then created to cater for the tourists. Today, you can visit the restored Pavilion and enjoy breath-taking views out across the Scottish Highlands.
