A guide to sharing photos with flickr

Flickr

Flickr is a great way to share you photographs with friends, family, and even the whole world (if you so wish)! You can also see other people's photos too.

What is flickr?

Flickr is a popular photo-sharing website owned and operated by Yahoo! with more than 4 billion photographs already on it. You can search other people’s photo galleries (those that are open to the public) or just browse through the photos of your friends and family.

What you can you do on the flickr website

  • Browse the billions of photographs already on flickr
  • Upload your photos and organise them into 'galleries' (this can be a handy way of backing up your digital photographs)
  • Share your photos with friends and family
  • Browse and comment on your friends' and family's photo galleries

Get started on flickr

  • opens link in new window Visit flickr and click on the ‘create your free account’ button to register
  • You'll be asked whether you already have a Yahoo! ID (i.e. if you have a Yahoo! email address), a Gmail email account or a facebook profile. If you do, you can use these log in details to skip the registration process; if you don't, this isn't a problem, you just need to provide some details on the registration form.
  • Because flickr is owned by Yahoo!, a Yahoo! email account will be set up for you during the account registration process. This doesn’t mean you have to use it for email but this email address and password will be needed to log on to flickr.
  • Once you’ve filled in your details, click on the ‘create account’ button, review the information you've submitted, make a note of your log in details, then click on the ‘continue’ button.
  • Next you need to create a ‘username’ that will be displayed on your galleries. This can be anything you like - from your real name to a nickname or something memorable (no spaces are allowed though).

Once you’ve completed everything above, you can read a step-by-step guide to uploading your first photos, by clicking on the ‘upload your fist photos’ link on the left hand side of the page. Choose the option for 'photos and videos’, and then browse your computer to find the folder where you have stored your photos (this is usually in your ‘My documents’ or ‘My Pictures’ folder if you’re using Windows).
