A guide to making calls over the internet with Skype

Flickr

Find out about Skype - the cheap way to stay in touch with friends and family by making and receiving phone and video calls over the internet.

What is Skype?

Skype is a software programme that allows you to make phone and video calls over the internet. If you have friends or family with Skype too, it’s free to call them, wherever they are in the world. You can also use Skype to make calls to regular landline numbers and mobile phones for a relatively small cost on a pay-as-you-go or monthly subscription basis.

What you’ll need

Firstly, it’s important that you have a reasonably fast, reliable broadband internet connection, and you’ll need a microphone and some speakers (or, ideally, a headset). Next, you’ll need to download the Skype software and register an account.
