Gardening Volunteer – Volunteer Role Description

Purpose of the role:
The aim of the Age UK Barnet Gardening Service is to support a small number of more vulnerable older clients within the Borough of Barnet, by undertaking general, basic gardening duties in order to maintain their gardens.  In this role you will always work alongside and assist the gardener staff member.

What a gardening volunteer might do in this role:
In all cases volunteers will be working alongside the gardener:

  • Help load and unload equipment,
  • Undertake basic garden maintenance such as basic weeding, cutting grass, tidying up leaves and garden waste etc.
  • Any other duties required to support the gardener

Personal qualities most suited to this role:

  • An interest and basic level of skill in garden maintenance
  • An understanding of health and safety issues
  • Good communication skills
  • Be aware of the needs of older people and be able to empathise with them.
  • Be reliable and honest
  • Good time-keeping
  • Commitment to the project and agreement to attend any training sessions, some of which may be online
  • Able to travel around the Borough and meet the gardener at client’s homes to assist.

Location: Various venues in the Borough of Barnet
How much time is involved? Varies, once or twice a week for between two to four hours, between April through to September. Sessions are likely to be on Wednesdays and Fridays.
What you can expect from us: Age UK Barnet will cover agreed out of pocket expenses for volunteers (e.g. travel costs). We will also insure you for personal and public liability for the time you are volunteering with us providing what you do is risk assessed and agreed. We offer training sessions in person and online. We are happy to provide references for our volunteers in the future.
