We have a new volunteer opportunity!

Are you friendly, organised and like meeting new people? We are seeking a Dementia Activities Volunteer to help run a range of social activities for people with dementia and their carers. Find out more...

Why volunteer?

Volunteers are a vital part of the work we do every day with and for older people in Berkshire. We have a wide range of volunteering opportunities, whether you want to make new friends, develop new skills or give something back to your local area.

You can support us and make a difference to the lives of older people, by doing anything from helping to run social groups and activities, giving someone a regular friendly phone call, or sharing your skills in a computer training class. However you'd like to get involved, we'd love to hear from you.

What can I do as a volunteer?

Here are just some examples:

■     Help to inform older people in your community about activities and services that are available to them
■     Become a befriender and visit/ phone someone who may be isolated or lonely
■     Teach someone computer basics and how to use the internet
■     Help out with one of our weekly activities, classes or clubs
■     Give administrative support to our office in Reading
■     Help out at an exercise class, supporting the tutor and attendees
■     Help us with fundraising

Who can volunteer?

Almost anyone can be a volunteer. We have a wide range of roles which suit different people and different skills.

How much time do I need to give?

How many hours you would like to offer and what type of volunteering you undertake is largely up to you; use your existing experiences, or gain new ones. We’re very happy to discuss this with you.

What is the process of becoming a volunteer?

All our volunteers go through a registration process which includes obtaining two references and a Disclosure and Barring check (if applicable). Age UK Berkshire has a strong commitment to paid staff and volunteers.
We will need time to find a good match with your interests, close to where you live if you want to be a Befriender or similar volunteer in an older person's home. We also expect a reasonably long-term commitment from you – at least 12 months – to establish and grow the friendship with the older person.

Dementia Activities Volunteers

Join us in making a meaningful impact on the lives of seniors in Reading, West Berkshire, and Wokingham as a Dementia Activities Volunteer! Your commitment of just 4 hours per month on weekdays can brighten someone's day. Be a part of our caring community and make a difference today.

What else you can do to support us

  • Take part in a fundraiser

Could you help us to raise vital funds by taking part in a fundraising event? We have regular events such as sponsored walks, but you could also do your own fundraiser like a cake sale.

  • Get your colleagues involved

Could you talk to your colleagues or your employer about how you can support us? We have lots of ideas for how organisations can get involved, including sponsoring an event, making us Charity of the Year, or donating equipment.
