A new family of ducks on the Lido - June 2020

Hi

I hope you are safe and well at this difficult time.

In this week’s newsletter, we include the latest government guidance, shopping in the best town in Britain, more face masks, and more bubbles!

Bury Cares

Over the phone, we have heard about the some of the great work carried out by care providers in Bury. This week is Bury Cares week – a time to celebrate the work of care home and care providers in Bury.

A celebratory video that showcases the work of those in care homes has been put together, featuring the daily lives of carers and care home residents. It is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soGQI6Yed7k&feature=youtu.be

Care providers - Take a bow and keep up the great work.

Shopping in Bury

If you are brave enough to go shopping in Bury, the council has published some advice on how to stay safe. The information is at this link: https://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15512

It is still as important as ever to practice social distancing at two meters at all times. You must only visit shops with people you live with or, if applicable, in your support bubble.

Our charity shops in Bury and Rammy will remain closed until August, as some staff, volunteers and many of our regular customers still need to remain at home.

More information about Support Bubbles

From 13 June, adults who live by themselves and single parents with children under 18 living at home in England can join up with one other household to create a support bubble.

Forming this support bubble means you effectively become one household – you can act as if you all lived together. This means you can do things such as go round to their house, stay the night and travel together in private vehicles.

Once you have formed your support bubble, you can't change who's in it. You also can not go into the homes of anyone outside your support bubble – unless it's in line with the wider guidance, which includes accessing a garden or other outdoor space.

Age UK has produced a fact sheet on support bubbles which is available here: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/coronavirus/coronavirus-guidance/support-bubbles/

Face Masks

Face masks must now be worn at Fairfield General Hospital and on public transport.

Last week’s email carried some links to videos on how to make a mask.

Here are two videos for people who can not sew or use a sewing machine. .

Nordic Walking with Diana

On Wednesdays, we are holding our first socially distanced activity, Nordic Walking, by the Clarence Park Lido.

We have space for two more people if you want to join us next Wednesday from 1.30. You must call 0161 763 9030 M-F, 10-2 to book a place. It is £5 per person, and we supply the poles and tuition. If there is the demand, we will look at holding a second session.

Petition to maintain high food standards

At the Jubilee Centre, we have always prioritised maintaining the highest food standards, as we know that older people are the most susceptible to food poisoning. Karen & our cafe staff work hard to achieve the Five Star food hygiene rating every year. However, all our work is dependent on us getting food products that meet the highest standards.

Which? Magazine has set up a petition demanding the UK government stand firm against pressure from the US and other future trade partners and save our food standards. More at: https://campaigns.which.co.uk/save-food-standards/

Bury Leisure

Bury Leisure is running a range of activities through the week on its Facebook page. New activities this week include 'Body Conditioning' with Lizzie and 'Lower Body Circuit Training' with Elle.

A new scam offering a free TV Licence for six months

The latest scam is an email claiming to be from TV Licensing, offering a "COVID19 Personalized Offer" of six months free TV licence. It contains links to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal personal and financial information.

Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information in case it's a scam. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected email or text.

So far, 2,378 victims have lost a combined total of over £7m to coronavirus-related scams. For a list of the main coronavirus scams, click onto https://www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/article/505/beware_of_covid_19_scams

Kicking Coronavirus!

On Monday morning, we received an email telling us about Elysia, age 11 from Bury, is karate kicking to raise funds for the Age UK Coronavirus appeal, which supports local Age UKs in their work.

Elysia loves karate and is already a GOLD national winner and a WUKF World Champion bronze medallist from 2019 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Elysia is putting her energy to good use by attempting to make 10,000 karate kicks over the next few weeks.

To support Elysia, click onto her Just Giving page.

Thank you Elysia and good luck with all the kicking.
