Greetings from the Jubilee Centre
Happy Bank Holiday Weekend! In this week’s email, we update you on our services, and tell you about some entertainment for the holiday weekend.
Government restrictions in Bury (28/8/2020)
Bury Council tweeted this week that the borough now has the thirteenth highest Covid-19 rate in the country. Whilst rates across GM are dropping, Bury’s continues to rise – and is now three times the national average.
The restrictions in Bury remain in place and are:
- you must not meet people you do not live with inside a private home or garden.
- you must not visit someone else’s home or garden - even if they live outside the affected areas.
- you should not socialise with people you do not live with in other indoor public venues – such as pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, places of worship, community centres, leisure and entertainment venues, or visitor attractions.
Everyone (unless exempt) must also wear face coverings in shops/supermarkets, public transport, banks and post offices, cinemas/theatres, places of workshop, libraries/museums and community centres.
Wash your hands frequently and stay two metres apart wherever possible.

The message from Bury Council is that we have one last chance to get our rate down, or the borough could go into a full lockdown. If this happens, and we have to close our cafe and shop, we will communicate this by an email newsletter, twitter and Facebook.
Jubilee Centre Cafe
The Cafe & Window Sales will be open next week on Tuesday to Friday from 10.30 to 2.30. We are reviewing how we do things to increase the number of tables available to customers, whilst ensuring there are safe social distancing measures in place.
You must sanitise your hands before coming in the cafe, and you must give your contact details if you are sitting down for a meal. We can take cash but we prefer contactless card payments.
Our charity shop on The Rock
Our new hours are
- Wednesday : 10.30 am to 3 pm
- Thursday - Saturday : 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.
The number of customers allowed in the shop will be SIX at any one time. We are asking all customers to sanitise their hands before coming in and to wear face coverings, unless medically exempt from doing so. Our staff and volunteers have the right to refuse entry if people ignore these rules.
Our shop in Ramsbottom will open in September.
Donations
We can accept a limited amount of donations at the Bury shop. We must store all donations for 72 hours before we can sort them and space in the shop is limited. Please phone 0161 761 2780 to check we have space before you set out.
We are unable to accept donations at the Jubilee Centre as we need to space to start activities when we are allowed to do so.
Online Activities
Diana will next be live on our Facebook page on Monday and Wednesday next week. As it is a Bank Holiday, Diana’s Monday classes will be one hour earlier. If you can’t make these times, Facebook will let you watch at a later time
- Monday: 10.00 to 10.30: Gentle Exercise
- Monday: 10.40 to 11.10: Chair Based Exercises
- Wednesday: 11.00 to 12.00 am: Pilates

Sue holds a Tai Chi class online on Fridays at 11.00 am. This class is aimed at those who attend the 12.15 Tuesday class and 11.00 Friday class at the Jubilee. Send an email to taichi.college@yahoo.co.uk or message Sue via Facebook at m.me/taichiandwildgooseqigongbury for the access code.
Foot Care Appointments
Dougie, our Foot Care Practitioner, will be at the Jubilee Centre from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm on Tuesday 1st September 2020. Each appointment costs £20. Please call in advance to make an appointment. Call 0161 763 9030,
Online Cookery Demonstration
Our friends at Age UK Wigan are holding an online cookery demonstration and have kindly invited us to join them.
Justina, from Vegetarian for Life will be showing how to make mushroom stroganoff and banana fool at 12 noon on Tuesday 1st September. This is free and more details, with links to the recipes, are at https://www.facebook.com/events/340549893792484/
Bank Holiday Festivals
This is normally the weekend of festivals in Greater Manchester but the pandemic means organisers have had to rethink their plans and hold the events online.
The Alternative Manchester Pride is holding events from Saturday to Monday at https://www.manchesterpride.com/alternative-manchester-pride-2020
Bolton holds its annual Food & Drink Festival from today to Monday at https://www.boltonfoodanddrinkfestival.com/

Survey on Hearing Aids
Healthwatch Bury and Communic8te (charity for Deaf and people with a hearing loss), are looking at the use of hearing aids and the reasons behind why people may not use them. We aim to use the results of this research to identify any potential areas for improvement for Deaf and hard of hearing people in Bury.
This questionnaire has been created for people who have been provided with a hearing aid - whether you currently use it or not. It should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. Scam Alert
A reader wrote in to say: “I got a scam HMRC call yesterday. I was told that, unless I paid up immediately, I would be arrested and the police were on the way. They weren't and I wasn't. I reported it to HMRC”
