Greetings from Age UK Bury

I hadn’t intended to send out another newsletter for another 10 days but a whole pile of news has just hit my desk, so here is an extra newsletter for the week!

I am including news about new support to help people through the cost-of-living crisis and an announcement about our next day trip. But first there are a few updates about this week at the Jubilee Centre.

Tai-Chi

Our Tai Classes on Thursday (11th August) and Friday (12th August) have been cancelled this week as our tutor, Sue, has come down with dreaded Covid. We wish Sue a speedy recovery.

Staying cool at the Jubilee Café

At the Jubilee Cafe, we are monitoring the weather closely and we will turn off the cooker if it gets too hot. It is looking possible that we may have to do this on Wednesday and most certainly on Thursday and Friday.

We will still be serving salads, sandwiches, drinks and plenty of ice creams and lollies! Enjoy the sun but please stay cool!

Our friends at Bury Public Health put together an information sheet about keeping your cool in a heatwave.

Bury Council – Support for Pensioners

A £100 payment is being given to every pensioner who receives council tax benefit. Payment will be via Post Office vouchers and is expected to be sent out in mid-August.

If you know of anyone who is struggling with their bills at this time, please urge them to contact us on 0161 763 9030 and Louise or Ruth from our Information and Advice Team will call them back. We offer free advice on all pensioner entitlements and benefits.

Iceland - 10% discount on Tuesdays

Iceland is offering a 10% discount to all over-60s shoppers.

To claim the discount, simply shop on a Tuesday and bring valid ID with you either in the form of a driver’s licence, bus or rail pass, passport or other official documentation.

Iceland - £30 pensioner gift vouchers

Bury pensioners, who live independently or with a carer, who rely solely on a state pension and benefits, will be able to claim a £30 voucher for food and other essentials.

Eligible pensioners should call the Summer Cheer hotline on 0800 098 7877 to request their voucher. The telephone line will be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

The vouchers can be redeemed at the Iceland stores in Bury (112/126 Rochdale Road, Bury, Lancashire, BL9 7AY) and Prestwich (16 Longfield Centre, Prestwich, Manchester, M25 1AY.)

You can use you voucher along with the 10% discount to make your money go further.

The campaign will run for seven weeks from 1 August until 16 September.

Day trip to Cheshire Oaks

Our next day trip from the Jubilee Centre will be to Cheshire Oaks at Ellesmere Port, which is a large, pedestrianised, village-style site for designer and high-street fashion brands. The shops offer plenty of discounts and there is a wide range of restaurants and cafes.

The date is Wednesday 14th September, and the pick-up is from Mosley Avenue, opposite the reception at the Jubilee at 10.00 am.

Tickets are £18.50 and are available from the reception at the Jubilee Centre.

As we need to book the coach in advance and we are not running the trip to make a profit, we are unable to offer refunds.

Good news for Ramsbottom residents

Ramsbottom has been picked out as the fourth best town for older people to retire to in the UK, according to recent data from personal alarm provider, TakingCare.

The number one location deemed as the best place to retire to was Llandudno, followed by Glossop, Southport, Ramsbottom and Saffron Walden.

The Changing Rooms at the Lido

Our closing photograph is of the Clarence Park Lido Changing Rooms before it was demolished to make way for the Jubilee Centre. The picture was donated by Angela at the Jubilee Centre Café and it was taken by her father, Ronald Sharp. If you have any pictures of our wonderful park that you would like to share, please send to news@ageukbury.org.uk

Keep Cool!
