Age is Just a Number

For the past year (17/18) our general meetings have been themed to our campaign, Creativity for Wellbeing and to offer our audiences the opportunity to participate in a range of arts. At our autumn meeting last October, we hosted a performing arts show by Two Crooners and an Age Gap, 2CAG for short! More about this can be read in the link below.

There is a fifty years age gap between the performers, John Walton and Matthew long of 2CAG. They explained to us that the age gap was of no significance to them at all and it was their love of shared musical interest that bonds their friendship. They wished to create a film to explore the intergenerational divide, perceptions and stereo-types and with the assistance of Arts Council funding and in association with Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, they have produced a short video called “Reaching Out”. The film was recorded at our autumn meeting and is a 30-minute documentary record of conversations with people, from a variety of backgrounds and a half century age span, who attended the performance at the Arbury Community Centre, Cambridge, in October 2018. You can view the film in the link below.

It is an interesting piece of work and we believe there is far more that joins generations than divides them.

This year our campaign theme is to promote an Intergenerational Programme.  That is activities to increase, support, encourage cooperation, raise awareness, interaction or exchange between generations. It involves sharing skills, knowledge and experiences between old and young. To help to reduce inaccurate stereo types by providing resources and opportunities for older and younger people to develop relationships with one another. This helps to build a sense of personal and society identity and to encourage tolerance. Individuals of all ages acquire skills and knowledge as they age, but also attitudes and values from daily experience and influences. Our campaign this year is to create opportunities for different generations to share and enjoy experiences together, to influence perceptions and promote that age needn’t cause generational barriers.
