Sharon has been volunteering at our Leather Lane charity shop for over five years.
How long have you been volunteering?
Over five years. I started volunteering at the shop when I was unemployed and looking for something worthwhile to do alongside my other hobbies.
What does the role involve?
Sorting and preparing donations, customer service and tidying up.
Are there any challenges?
I already have an insight into the issues affecting older people as I worked as a carer in the past but I find that older people are really struggling with the cuts. It’s very sad. I make extra time to speak to the older customers who come into the shop.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
It’s really interesting meeting and listening to people that you wouldn’t otherwise meet. People come in from all different walks of life—young and old, from different countries – it’s very rewarding. It means I’m doing something worthwhile, and that makes me feel good about myself.
