Age UK Statistics show that the number of over-50s experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/6. This compares to around 1.4 million in 2016/17, a 49% increase in 10 years. Nearly half (49%) of all people aged 75 and over live alone.
“As a Patron of Age UK Camden, our local independent older people’s charity, I am proud to support the Warm Heart 2020 campaign. Winter is a particularly difficult time for many of the older people we work with as cold weather and high energy prices exacerbate illness and rates of poverty. The colder days also inevitably increase isolation. As human beings we are social creatures. Our connection to others enables us to survive and thrive. Yet, as we age, many of us are alone more often than we were when we were younger, leaving us vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness and related health problems such as cognitive decline, depression and heart disease. Fortunately, there are ways to counteract these negative effects.” Sir Derek Jacobi Patron
We would urge anyone who is in a position to do so, to donate to our Warm Heart Camden 2020 campaign. We are enormously grateful for donations of any size. It is incredibly important to address the issue of social isolation, particularly during the winter months help us keep our most vulnerable residents warm, well fed and connected in their community. Last year’s Warm Heart campaign raised over £7,000 which helped us reach the most in need, this year we would love to be able to help even more people and ensure that no one falls through the gaps.
