Age UK Cheshire are excited to be launching a much-needed new service at the Countess of Chester Hospital
From December 2017 Age UK Cheshire will be recruiting a team of volunteers to have a presence on the two Care of the Elderly wards at the Countess Hospital. The service aims to provide social stimulation to patients, many of whom remain on the ward for long periods due to lack of community based support. Although older people are not alone on hospital wards they can still be very lonely places.
The volunteer role will be:
- To provide support, befriending and companionship to patients. This could include playing board games and completing jigsaw puzzles, organising activities or chatting about any issues or concerns or general conversations about hobbies and interests.
- To provide basic Information and Advice to patients on queries that arise from the hospital stay and discharge home.
- To distribute Age UK factsheets and guides that cover a wide variety of topics to patients and their families and friends.
- To refer into other Age UK Cheshire services and other community based organisations for further support where necessary (for example Dementia Advice Service, Men in Sheds, Falls Prevention).
We are looking for committed individuals who can provide a couple of hours per week to spend time on these wards, offering a friendly smile and chat to patients, increasing their wellbeing and making their stay in hospital a more positive experience. Full training and support will be offered.
