Fowey gets a new Community Minibus

Published on 01 August 2018 11:51 PM

Transport Access People (TAP) and Age UK Cornwall, who provide and arrange door-to-door transport for people who have difficulty accessing other forms of public transport, are celebrating delivery of a new community Minibus in Fowey.

The wheelchair accessible Minibus is now fully operational and enhances on the current Community Minibus Service that operates in Fowey and the surrounding areas. This fantastic service runs throughout the week and also at weekends, providing a lovely mix of trips for all ages.
Whether it is running shoppers to Tesco, Asda & Par Market or scheduling exciting mystery day trips around Cornwall, this service has something for everyone.

Colin Richards, Fowey Service Lead said: "We are very fortunate to have the backing of Age UK Cornwall, who support us with most of the admin for a minimal cost. It reassuring to have their expertise and professional advice whenever we need some help. Our bus service has been operating for many years (since the early 1940s) in the community and continues to try and expand a much-needed service to the people of Fowey and surrounding areas. Living in one if the most isolated parts of the county, we are an essential service for many to get out and about, especially the elderly."

"The purchase of our new bus has only been made possible by fundraising, the generosity of local residents and a substantial donation from a trust. However, this purchase has left our funds exceedingly low so we must continue to keep our funds adequate to meet all eventualities. Our new bus benefits from improved seating, air conditioning, drop down side step for easy access, and a fully automatic rear lift to accommodate wheelchairs and extra seating. We have a dedicated team of volunteers who give their time freely which is always appreciated so why not give a few hours a month and help those less fortunate than ourselves."

Age UK Cornwall, Transport Director Ann Lewis said: “We are delighted with our new fully accessible minibus. It will mean that more people will benefit from the activities and social groups that run in the area. The Fowey minibus service already supports so many, and this new minibus means we will continue to provide invaluable solutions for individuals that have difficulty accessing other forms of public transport."

" Volunteers are the foundation of our transport services, and, we are always looking for more volunteer drivers across the County, so if you have any spare time and would like to help the local community, please give us a call or pop in for a chat.”
