60 over 60 - Our Inspirational team

Published on 27 September 2019 06:56 AM

The 60 over 60 campaign highlights the achievements of sixty inspirational individuals across Cornwall who have taken steps to live and age well in their sixties and beyond. Here you can read about two of those inspirational people, who we are extremely proud to say are part of the Age UK Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly team.

Nominated in the category - Volunteer Superstar:

Judy Eades

With a background in adult social care, Judy now uses her considerable experience, knowledge and enthusiasm as a volunteer, committing many hours to various projects and has even met Prince Charles in recognition of her outstanding work.

Speaking about Judy, her peers say that, "Judy, who is now over 70, pushes the limits of volunteering. She consistently assists with many projects and commits extra hours of volunteering and support to befriend groups across Cornwall.

Her ability to offer knowledge, advice and considerable experience means that she can build an instant rapport with those around her. Volunteering has given Judy a new zest for life, as well as a sense of purpose and direction.

She has an infectious habit of putting people at ease and breaking down barriers to help to bring a little bit of laughter back into any environment. Judy considers herself a friend and a soundboard for those who she supports."

Nominated in the category - Community Champion:

Anne Nicholls

A longstanding volunteer & staff member with Age UK Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, Anne has been instrumental in helping to improve the lives of hundreds of people across Cornwall.

Her colleagues say that, "her ability to connect with and look out for people is not just reserved for her work role but, as an Age UK Cornwall volunteer, she has been instrumental in helping people to access millions of pounds in unclaimed benefit, giving the gift of greater financial independence and overall wellbeing to countless individuals across Cornwall."

Alongside this, Anne is also a key figure in her local housing community, explaining, "I take an active part in organising regular social meetings, alongside more able residents, to enable those who are not so mobile to mix socially with other residents outside of their apartments. This is done with the support of a very active community."

Anne believes that there are a number of benefits to volunteering to support your local community. She explains, "It gives you a feeling of purpose and makes you feel as though you are a valuable member of the community, who gives back some of the experience which you have gained over the years. There are many forms of volunteering and you can seek the task which best meets your own interests and experience."

Anne's experience volunteering within her local community has led her to believe that the secret to a happy and healthy life in your later years is to, "keep active, both mentally and physically - whilst acknowledging your own limits - and to work within these."
