Angela's Story - Befriending

Published on 04 June 2019 12:24 PM

Volunteers' Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK. Between the 1st-7th of June, we wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate volunteering in Cornwall by sharing stories written by our Volunteers.

Every day, in so many ways, our volunteers give their time and effort to make an incredible difference for older people. Without them, we couldn’t be here when we’re needed most. Please read & share Angela's story as widely as you can.

What do befrienders do?

It's a terrible thing to be lonely. Did you know that 1.2 million older people are chronically lonely? You can do something to help by becoming a befriender or telephone befriender with Age UK Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly.

Befrienders get matched with an older person in the community. They visit them or call them on a regular basis to provide companionship. Last year we helped over 230 clients & offered over 11,500 hours of support to help break the cycle of loneliness.
