Telephone befriending

Our telephone befriending scheme is very popular. On a weekly basis our volunteers and staff are making approximately 500 wellbeing calls to those in need of a friendly phone call and a chat to make sure they are doing well.
One lady, Evelyn, is so pleased with her calls that she wrote a poem about her telephone befriender …
My Friend
I know a lady named Karen,
Who works for County Durham Age UK,
She rings me every Thursday at 10.30am,
She listens to all my woes, my joys too,
She always ends my calls with take care, I shall ring you next week,
It is something to look forward too.
She rings me from her home,
That makes the call more special,
That she should take the time to ring me, I’m no one special.
The people I think need the help,
Are those with dementia,
Who don’t know what is happening,
In this mixed-up world of ours.
My friend thinks everyone has the flu,
That is why he has to wear a mask,
If only that is what it is,
For that there is a cure
I shall remember Karen with delight,
So grateful am I for her calls,
County Durham Age UK have surely got it right.
