Volunteering Role: Tai Chi Instructor

Why did you want to volunteer with Age Cymru?

I decided to volunteer, as I realised how lucky I have been in my life and wanted to ‘give something back’. As a teacher of 30 years’ experience I realised that I had skills that could be useful to others.

What difference to your life has volunteering made to you?

Volunteering has made me realise what a huge hole there is in terms of provisions for oldr people (and indeed for other vulnerable groups). It is very rewarding as people are so appreciative. It has also helped me to understand much better the difficulties faced by older people.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteering experience?

What I have most enjoyed has been the obvious pleasure of those taking part in the class, both the actual Tai Chi and the cuppa that follows.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of becoming involved with volunteering?

I would tell anyone thinking of volunteering that it is well wort the relatively small amount of time and effort you have to give in return for the clear benefits enjoyed by a whole group of participants. You get such a buzz from being told that what you are doing is ‘making a difference’.
