Volunteering Role: LIFT Leader

Why did you want to volunteer with Age Cymru?

I enjoy working with older persons – delivering gentle exercise programmes – that are fun and help to promote physical and social wellbeing

What difference to your life has volunteering made to you?

Delivering the class within a sheltered housing scheme some of the tenants who live at the scheme do not go out into the community at all – so having a stimulating classes brought to the scheme especially benefits these participants.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteering experience?

Seeing the participants benefit on both the physical and social aspect to the class – e.g taking part in physical activity, singing along to the music, reminiscing on ‘old tunes’, meeting together socially and gaining confidence.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of becoming involved with volunteering?

Do it. Volunteering with Age Cymru has raised my awareness of how many older people today face loneliness because of many factors such as being widowed, living alone and poor health and mobility. Combating loneliness is as important as recognising an older person’s physical needs too as loneliness can contribute to depression and stress. Volunteering with Age Cymru has helped me to help others improve their physical, social and mental wellbeing.
