Reports of scams in the press are becoming increasingly common, detailing the financial and emotional costs to the victim. They come in a bewildering variety of forms through methods such as: unsolicited letters, unexpected phone calls, doorstep callers and increasingly through email, texts and the internet.

People of all ages can fall victim to a scam, and scammers take no account of a person's age or vulnerability. They have no qualms about who they hurt, and sadly it is often older people who are specifically targeted. Fraud is now the most commonly experienced crime, so an awareness of it is vital in protecting ourselves.

Scam Awareness Project

In response to the rise in this type of crime, Age Cymru Gwent are running scam awareness sessions, for groups and individuals, via our Scam Awareness Project. In the meantime there are some simple steps you can take, which will help reduce the amount of scam telephone calls and letters you get:
Obtain a free Call Blocker Unit provided by TrueCall which will hugely reduce scam calls to your landline. Contact us on the numbers above to get yours.

Register with the Telephone Preference Service to cut down unwanted phone calls.

Register with the Mail Preference Service to reduce unwanted mail.

Check this page regularly and pass the information on to as many of your friends and family as possible. If you have come across a scam yourself, inform the Police and please let us know so we can warn others.
