‘I'm thrilled with what Sean did for me... things I can’t do myself anymore. I can already feel the difference it's made to how much warmer I feel. I don’t worry as much anymore’.

David* (not his real name) is 86 years old; he lives alone since he lost his wife to a sudden heart attack two winters ago. He's been struggling to keep his home warm, but was reluctant to ask for help. His late wife was the one to arrange things like household bills and keeping the home, "she was very organised like that" David told us. A neighbour persuaded David to contact Age Cymru when they heard about our Spread the Warmth campaign.

How Age Cymru were able to help

David contacted Age Cymru Advice. We advised him on the extra money he's entitled to claim to help pay his heating bills. We also put him in touch with our HandyVan service. Sean, our HandyVan fitter visited David’s home and undertook a home energy check. David was at risk of cold related illnesses and was worried after what had happened to his wife. Sean fitted insulation foam around the windows, radiator foil behind the radiators and draught excluders on the front and back doors. This made the house easier and cheaper to keep warm as the heat was no longer escaping. Sean also carried out a falls assessment looking for any hazards that David could slip, trip or fall over. Sean fitted energy efficient light bulbs which give off a brighter light on the stairs and landing. He also fitted grab rails and added a remote control socket to make it easier for David to turn off the TV rather than leaving it on standby. Sean also gave David our Winter Wrapped Up guide, some room thermometers to monitor the temperature in his living room and bedroom and our Avoiding slips, trips and falls booklet.
