Age Cymru at the Senedd

Published on 11 January 2012 11:00 AM

Age Cymru and over 60 older people from across Wales will be speaking to Assembly Members today about the issues that matter to older people.

The event is being organised at the Senedd by Age Alliance Wales - a coalition of national organisations working for older people, of which Age Cymru is a member.

Robert Taylor, Age Cymru's Chief Executive says:

"Among the issues we expect to be raised today are older people and carers' strong desire to have care services that provide individually tailored packages of support to help them to maintain their health and wellbeing as they grow older.

"We also know that a big concern is the lack of opportunities for older people to continue to learn skills they need to support their wellbeing in later life, such as using the internet and other digital technology."

16 of Age Alliance Wales's member organisations will also be at the event to talk about the needs of our ageing population, as Sarah Rochira, Age Alliance Wales's Chair and Chief Executive of RNIB Cymru explains:

"With Wales' ageing population - which is ageing more rapidly than that of the rest of the UK, it is vital that Welsh Government policies reflect and effectively meet the needs of older people.

"We have much in Wales to be proud of but also much that we urgently need to address and creating opportunities for older people to influence government is an important part of that process.

"This is why we've organised today's event to give older people the chance to tell their Assembly Members about the realities of being an older person in Wales today."

The Age Alliance Wales event is taking place at the Senedd at 12.00 noon until 1.30pm.
