Age Cymru welcomes Food Safety Week 16 22 June

Published on 16 June 2014 08:00 AM

‘Don't wash raw chicken' is the Food Standards Agency's key message this week - Food Safety Week.

Campylobacter - the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK, comes from washing raw chicken.

Bacteria from washing the chicken is transferred to your sink, utensils and hands, which causes stomach upsets.

Age Cymru's Healthy Ageing Manager, Claire Bottomley says;

"We're pleased to support Food Safety Week to ensure that older people across Wales are aware of the food poisoning risks when handling raw chicken.

"Through our Age Cymru Healthy Ageing Programme we want to ensure that older people stay safe at home and follow the Food Standards Agency easy to follow guidelines.

"Help spread the message, not the germs. Don't wash your raw chicken!"

Food Standards Agency is advising people to;

• Cover and chill raw chicken
• Don't wash raw chicken
• Washed used utensils
• Cook chicken thoroughly

Be part of Food Safety Week by joining the discussion on Twitter and Facebook by using the hastag #fsw2014.
