Age discrimination in the NHS banned

Published on 12 June 2012 03:30 PM

Age Cymru has welcomed today's announcement that age discrimination by NHS hospitals is to be made illegal.

Commenting on the statement made by UK Goverment Care Minister Paul Burstow, Age Cymru's Head of Public Affairs and Policy Graeme Francis says:

"We welcome the overdue news that age discriminatory practices in the delivery of public services will finally become unlawful in October.

"Age Cymru has long campaigned for this recognition that discrimination based on your date of birth is as indefensible the in 21st Century as prejudice on the basis of race, gender, disability or sexual orientation.

"We hope the new law, which will apply to the NHS, social care and other services, will prevent older people being denied proper treatment because of their age.

"It sends a clear message to service providers that discrimination law will in future also protect older people."
