Swansea East AM Mike Hedges is chairing a discussion about isolation and loneliness and the impact it has on older people today. (Tuesday 3 February)

The Cross Party Group on Older People and Ageing is meeting just after midday (12.15pm) in conference room 24 at Tŷ Hywel in Cardiff Bay.

Commenting on the ‘Combating isolation and loneliness' debate, Mike Hedges AM, Chair of the Cross Party Group on Older People and Ageing, says:

"I welcome the opportunity to chair the Cross Party Group on Older People and Ageing on combating isolation and loneliness.

"Loneliness and isolation can easily lead to depression and have a serious effect on general health.

"I am well aware of the increasing numbers of people in our communities who are left feeling lonely; we need to do more to support them.

"Age Cymru Sir Gar's befriending scheme provides valuable support and I am pleased to welcome them to the National Assembly and look forward to working with them."

Rebecca Thomas, Age Cymru Sir Gâr's Befriending Links Project Manager, who will be presenting at the meeting, says:

"I welcome this opportunity to speak to Assembly Members and organisations about the important work we are doing in west Wales to support isolated older people.

"The befriending scheme provides additional support and friendship to people who are lonely, giving them a new lease of life and better wellbeing."

Age Cymru provide secretariat for the Cross Party Group on Older People and Ageing.
