British Gas price rise - Age Cymru response

Published on 17 October 2013 12:30 PM

With British Gas today announcing an average increase of 9.2% in household energy prices, Age Cymru's Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis, says:

"Following on from last week's announcement of a price rise by SSE, this move from British Gas seems to confirm the annual round of price rises from the Big Six energy companies that we have seen in recent years is under way.

"While Age Cymru welcomes the news that an automatic discount of £20.00 to £60.00 will be provided to some British Gas customers through the Warm Home Deal and ‘Essentials' social tariff, overall this announcement will mean higher bills for millions.

"It is vital that we address the impact of energy prices on older people and other groups who are potentially vulnerable during the winter months.

"Last winter in Wales older people were more likely to cut back on heating and eating than those anywhere else in the UK.

"Age Cymru is calling for action from government, the energy regulator and the energy companies to come up with sustainable solutions to make sure that everyone can keep warm when the temperatures start to drop."
