Carbon monoxide poisoning

Published on 26 November 2012 04:00 PM

Age Cymru and Wales & West Utilities have joined forces to help protect older people from carbon monoxide poisoning.

We're working with the gas distribution company to raise awareness among over 65s of the dangers of the so-called ‘silent killer'.

Jackie Roe, Head of Corporate Affairs for Wales & West Utilities says:

"Carbon monoxide poisoning kills 50 people a year in the UK.

"It is a poisonous gas produced by burning any fossil fuel such as coal, wood, oil or natural gas without adequate ventilation.

"Carbon monoxide has no smell, taste or colour, and it can kill without warning in a matter of minutes.  Older people and the young are particularly at risk from it.

"Wales & West Utilities is glad to be working nationally with Age Cymru to help keep older people safe by keeping them aware of  the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to protect themselves from the so-called ‘silent killer'."

Wales & West Utilities and Age Cymru launched their safety campaign at the Age Cymru Afan Nedd day centre in Port Talbot on Thursday 21 November.

Visitors to the centre saw Wales & West Utilities's new film -‘The Silent Killer' and were given audible carbon monoxide alarms and information packs.

Age Cymru's Corporate Relations Manager Michael Phillips says:

"It's important that we're all protected from carbon monoxide poisoning and there are some simple steps we can all take to ensure this.

"Make sure your appliances are serviced every year by a registered gas engineer and that your chimneys and flues are not blocked up.

"You should also get yourself an audible carbon monoxide alarm - this is one that makes a noise if it detects carbon monoxide in your home - it will give you and your family peace of mind, and it could save your life."
