Default retirement age

Age Cymru has welcomed the confirmation from the UK Government that it will phase out the default retirement age - that's the law that allows employers to force people to retire at 65, this year.
Victoria Lloyd, Director of Influencing and Programme Development at Age Cymru says:
"We are delighted that common sense prevails and that the UK Government will scrap the default retirement age recognising the rights of older people to continue to work should they wish to do so.
"The default retirement age is a discriminatory and unfair law and this announcement marks a huge victory for hundreds of thousands of employees who are at risk of being forced out of their jobs because of their age.
"Scrapping the default retirement age will allow older people to pursue available opportunities that enable them to contribute fully to our social and economic life.
"The economy will also benefit from older workers' precious skills and experience and their increased buying power and public finances will receive a boost from more people paying taxes for longer."
