Delivering Dignity report

Age Cymru has welcomed the publication of a report today in England by the Commission on Improving Dignity.
Delivering Dignity was compiled by Age UK, the NHS Confederation and the Local Government Association.
It calls for an overhaul of care standards in hospitals and care homes and for every older person receiving care to be protected by human rights legislation.
Our Head of Public Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis comments:
"While the recommendations made in this report specifically cover older people in England, we believe that many of the central messages are equally applicable in Wales.
"Age Cymru commends its authors for raising awareness of the need to treat older people in care with dignity and to protect their interests with the full force of the law.
"We hope that by revealing the full extent of the poor care received by some older people in care, this report will further galvanise those providing care to ensure that all older people in care are receiving the care they deserve.
"Age Cymru also fully agrees with the report that terms such as ‘bed blockers' and others that imply older people are a burden, should be banned outright.
"Our hope is that the publication of this report and others such as Dignified Care? produced by the Older People's Commissioner in Wales in 2011 will lead to change in dignity and quality care for all older people across the UK."
