Dementia carers debate

Welsh Assembly Members discussed the role of carers who look after older people with dementia yesterday.
The Cross Party Group on Older People and Ageing debated ‘Supporting and involving carers of people with dementia'.
Commenting, Mike Hedges AM, Chair of the Cross Party Group on Older People and Ageing, said:
"I am well aware of the increasing numbers of people in our communities affected by dementia; the burden for supporting these people often falls on the family members who become care providers.
"We need to provide support for carers in these difficult situations and ensure that they are involved in decisions affecting their loved ones."
Graeme Francis, our Head of Policy and Public Affairs said:
"According to the Alzheimer's Society, there are an estimated 37,000 people in Wales with dementia at the moment and government figures show this is set to rise by 35% in the next 20 years.
"We need to remain focused on the needs of carers - they are the selfless individuals who give their all and make tremendous sacrifices so that they can provide the best care they can for the people they look after."
