Dementia response

Published on 09 February 2011 02:30 PM

Responding to newspaper reports today that 1 million people in Britain will suffer some form of dementia within two decades and one in three pensioners will die from it, Graeme Francis of Age Cymru says:

"The population of Wales is getting older and is actually ageing faster than that of anywhere else in the UK. Currently 1 in 4 adults in Wales are aged 65 or over - by 2031 1 in 3 adults in Wales will be aged 65 or over.

"These figures are further proof that we need a proper public debate about the health needs of our ageing population as we have to prepare for the future.

"We need services and facilities to keep older people healthy, better treatment for age-related health conditions such as dementia and more investment into dementia research."
