First pasta the post - Wales's favourite dish to share

Published on 04 May 2012 01:30 PM

Wales's favourite food to share with family, friends and loved ones is pasta - and that's official.

We asked our 2,800 Twitter followers to nominate their favourite dish to share ahead of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on 3 June.

Nia Butler from Age Cymru says:

"Age Cymru is a lead partner in The Big Jubilee Lunch which will bring people together with their neighbours to share a bite to eat and celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

"There'll be street and garden parties, barbecues and get-togethers being organised right across Wales on Sunday 3 June.

"But what delicacies will the people of Wales will be sharing on the weekend of 3 June? We asked and the people of Wales spoke."

The Welsh public's top five favourite dishes to share are:

1. Pasta
2. Casserole
3. Mexican food
4. Chinese food
5. Roast dinner

Nia Butler comments:

"Wales is obviously potty for pasta - be it lasagne, macaroni cheese, pasta bake or spaghetti Bolognese and pasta was a clear winner.

"Casseroles came in second - from traditional cawl, to sausage casserole to Moroccan lamb tagine - a very broad range of dishes to choose from.

"Mexican food was also a popular choice, with nachos and dips featuring prominently, and Chinese food came in fourth with dim sum and sweet & sour chicken among the favourites.

"Fifth spot went to the good old-fashioned roast dinner -a family favourite for generations across Wales."

Age Cymru is asking members of the public to organise their own Big Jubilee Lunch celebration between 28 May and 5 June, and invite their family members, friends and neighbours along.

Nia Butler concludes:

"Please get involved and organise your own Big Jubilee Lunch event - you can also use the event to raise funds for Age Cymru at the same time.

"We can provide you with a free pack to help you get started and organise your very own Big Jubilee Lunch event.

"Please contact me on 029 2043 1544, or send an email to nia.butler@agecymru.org.uk, and I'll get a pack out to you."

The Big Jubilee Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project.

The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.
Tim Smit KBE, Chief Executive of the Eden Project said:

"Britain has a rich heritage of organising street parties for Royal celebrations.

"We're honoured to be part of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend, and we're sure millions of people will break bread together on 3 June, making this the biggest Big Lunch yet."
