Gas Safety Week

Published on 14 September 2011 11:00 AM

Age Cymru is backing Gas Safety Week 2011.

Gas Safety Week runs from 12-18 September and is run by the Gas Safe Register.

The event aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of gas appliances.

Age Cymru's Healthy Ageing Manager Claire Bottomley says:

"Getting your gas appliances checked every year before the winter months is absolutely vital, and it should be part of you annual pre-winter preparations.

"Gas appliances that are not properly maintained can be dangerous and lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and even explosions.

"Carbon monoxide is the so-called ‘silent killer' - you can't see, taste or smell it and on average it kills fifty people a year across the UK."

Claire Bottomley concludes:

"Getting your appliances checked and serviced before winter also means that you will have the reassurance of knowing that your central heating will work when you need it as the weather turns colder."
