Gwanwyn is coming

Published on 20 April 2012 08:30 AM

Wales's only annual national arts festival for over 50s is six years old on May 1.

The Gwanwyn festival from Age Cymru celebrates arts and creativity for older people.

Every May, it promotes four weeks of events across Wales which give over 50s the chance to take part in the arts.

Philip Thomas, Gwanwyn's Coordinator says:

"Six years on - and in the face of the swingeing budget cuts sweeping the arts world in Wales, I'm very happy to report that Gwanwyn is still here and going from strength to strength.

"Gwanwyn is a celebration of creativity among older people.

"It provides opportunities for people to perform, exhibit, discuss, network and have fun.

"The real beauty of Gwanwyn however is that anyone can get involved in the festival - either as an event organiser, performer, artist, audience member or critic."

The Gwanwyn festival website features a list of events that will be taking place across Wales during May.

Phil Thomas comments:

"Last year we had almost 300 events taking place across Wales involving 9,000 people.

"This year, 70 organisations have signed up to organise Gwanwyn events during May and we're doubly confident there'll be something for everyone again this year.

"So make sure you check the Gwanwyn website for details of events taking place in your area.

He concludes:

"The support for Gwanwyn from the people of Wales, the Arts Council for Wales and Welsh Government over the last six years has been outstanding - they've made the festival what it is.

"Gwanwyn has clearly struck a chord with the people of Wales and we're definitely doing something right - long may it continue."
