"I've saved lives with CO detectors", says Sean

"Protect your family and yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning by getting a carbon monoxide detector for your home" - that's the message from Age Cymru and Wales & West Utilities.

Carbon monoxide is known as ‘The silent killer' because we can't see, smell or taste it and every year in the UK carbon monoxide poisoning kills 50 people and injures 4,000 others.

Sean Overbury, Age Cymru's HandyVan fitter, says:

"Over the last 12 months alone, I've dealt with five cases of potential carbon monoxide poisoning.

"In all these cases, the HandyVan customers rang our office to say that the detector I had just installed for them was defective and beeping.

"The devices had sensed existing carbon monoxide leaks that had been there for quite some time, but the homeowners didn't know about them.

"I dread to think what would have happened to those people if they didn't have those carbon monoxide detectors installed, but luckily they did and I'm convinced that people's lives were saved."

Elizabeth Warwick, Wales & West Utilities Corporate Affairs Manager, said:

"This is a fantastic result for the first year of our partnership with Age Cymru.

"We are delighted that our support is helping keep older people safe from the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and are committed to continuing our support for HandyVan."
